Fernando Tercero leaves his mark on the Aiztondo Klasika with a magnificent performance and the win in Alkiza

XVIII Aiztondo Klasika / Copa de España
Larraul – Alkiza (139,5 km)

Fernando Tercero from La Mancha opened the jar of essences this Sunday in the Aiztondo Klasika, third race of the Copa de España 2022, with a formidable victory that put the finishing touch to a great collective performance of the team led by Rafa Díaz Justo. An always demanding Aiztondo Klasika in which Tercero was one of the main protagonists thanks to a breakaway with Sinuhé Fernández who led the development of the race for many kilometres.

Tercero, in his second victory of the season after the overall of the recent Manolo Sanroma Memorial, showed his great quality on the uphill road. In the final 40 kilometres, still on the circuit where the Aduna ramps imposed the hardness, the Valdepeñas rider, together with Fernández, led a breakaway that reached a dangerous margin of one minute.

This move gave continuity to a previous one, earlier, in which Ramón Fernández was also involved, coming from behind with José Marín, until the last exponents of the breakaway of the day, Diego Uriarte and the Danish Christian Gorm.

The good understanding of Tercero and Fernández allowed to live a great pulse between the vanguard of the race and the first chasing group, where the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team also had representation. Tercero would end up going solo on the last climb to Aduna, maintaining a fifteen-second margin over the chasing group that, with a lot of work from the Lizarte team, would end up catching him before the final climb.

Tercero held on in that group of eight riders, which also included Fran Muñoz, and managed the very high pace imposed by the riders of the Navarre squad. Muñoz gave way, but Tercero, with the last kilometre ahead, accelerated again to get away alone, pursued by Mikel Retegi, and score his first success in the Copa de España. Sixth was Fran Muñoz, also a great performance by the cyclist from Mataró. Eighth, Davide Piganzoli. And six EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team riders in the top-25 (Andrea Pietrobon, 18th; Marcel Camprubí, 19th; Ramón Fernández, 25th).Ángel Coterillo (Gomur) is the new leader of the competition.

Fernando Tercero, also KOM overall winner: “A very nice victory, in front of a passionate and impressive crowd. It was a very nervous race on a very tough circuit. It was essential to be very attentive at all times and that’s how it was. The team has been great and I think we have done a perfect job. The team is very strong, we have several assets and in terms of the Cup we’re going to continue in the same way, going trial by trial. The last climb was really hard, with Lizarte setting a very hard pace from the bottom. I knew that I didn’t have much chance in the sprint and that the last kilometre was probably the hardest, so I decided to give it a go. And from there I pushed hard until the finish. A very nice victory. Professionalism? It’s the dream we all have. From then on you have to keep working, without pressure, doing things well. And with good work, everything that has to come, will come”.
