Fernando Tercero is twelfth at the overall of the Giro after a variable windy time trial
44ª Giro d´Italia U23
Stage 4: Sorbolo Mezzani – Guastalla (25,4 km ITT)
With the emotional impact of losing Vicente Hernaiz, who was in great shape for this Giro Giovani 2021, this Sunday was the time trial of more than 25 kilometres that will surely have implications in the final general classification. The victory went to Italian Filippo Baroncini (29’36”), while Englishman Ben Turner took the maglia rosa with a one-second margin over previous leader Juan Ayuso. Fernando Tercero, 18th, was the best rider of the Foundation’s U23 structure, 55 seconds behind the winner.
The time trial was marked by the change of direction and strength of the wind that occurred halfway through the race. If at the beginning it hardly blew with force or if it did it was against the efforts of the riders, halfway through the race its intensity increased and it began to blow in favour and from the side.
“The change of wind between the first and last riders was an important factor. It’s something that sometimes happens and that’s why Jonny couldn’t be our best man in the classification on the day. In general the times of our climbers are good, especially thinking about the rest of the race and the fact that many of those who did very well today are more specialists in this discipline than climbers. Now comes another Giro d’Italia. We are going to go day by day to keep climbing and improving”, explains director Rafa Díaz Justo.
This Monday is the first important stage, finishing in Sestola after following routes very similar to those of the last Giro d’Italia. Fernando Tercero is twelfth overall, 55 seconds behind the leader.
