Fancellu not missing the fight at the closing of the Settimana Coppi e Bartali
Settimana Internazionale di Coppi e Bartali
Stage 5: Forli – Forli (166 km)
The Settimana Coppi e Bartali closed this Saturday five days of intense cycling for the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team. Another very productive experience in the first season in the category. The final circuit in Forli, with up to seven stages on the ascent to Rocca delle Caminate, offered a great spectacle of which Alessandro Fancellu was a special participant.
The young rider from Lombardy managed to join a breakaway initially of seven riders that opened the race for many kilometres. A breakaway that took a long time to develop and in whose search and formation other riders of the team were involved. Márton Dina was not able to catch it, but the Colombian Alejandro Osorio did, which he took advantage of to get to the first scoring pass, the third, and snatch the final lead in this classification from the Hungarian.
The stage was decided on the final pass over the Rocca delle Caminate, with the summit with less than twenty kilometres to go. At its foot, the breakaway of the day came to a definitive end and after its slopes a race situation was formed with fifteen riders at the front. The Danish Mikkel Honoré, the eventual winner of the final stage, and overall leader Jonas Vingegaard stood out among the vanguard. Edward Ravasi could not be in that group, after a whole day in a very good position, after being involved in a crash.
Ravasi would reach the finish line in a second group, 36 seconds behind the winner. In the final overall, the Varesino finally finished 14th.
Marton Dina: “I can only say that I’m sorry, I would have liked to keep the green jersey until the end but today I had two problems: the right leg and the left leg. They didn’t have any more. On the passage to the KOM I tried to keep the wheel of Osorio but I did not make it even if I gave everything, I’m sorry for me and for the team. For sure, and this is the beauty of cycling, from tomorrow morning I will work hard to forget this disappointment and fight for some important goal. And this is a promise”.
Stefano Zanatta, sport director: “The team raced well, for what is our level: we showed ourselves, we were in front, we made experience: for many of our riders this was the first stage race, then we had Ravasi that this year had not yet raced and has always managed to stay with the best. Today he has also crashed, as Fancellu. We look ahead, and we accumulate experience for the next races”.
