Fabbro withstands the storm to finish in the top-10 of Gran Camiño
8th on Monte Aloia, a summit finish that was only climbed once due to the wind and rain storm, and 10th in the general classification, Matteo Fabbro achieved his goals in his debut with Team Polti Kometa.
Extreme weather conditions forced to reduce the final stage of O Gran Camiño, which took place over 133 kilometres and in which the team did not miss their goals, aware of the opportunity to achieve a good result. They did so, with Álex Martín fighting the breakaway in the initial part, and with Mirco Maestri guiding Fabbro to perfection in the decisive part.
The reward: 8th place at the finish line for Matteo Fabbro, alongside the rest of the favourites and confirming 10th place in the final overall, which leaves Team Polti Kometa satisfied before travelling to Italy to continue the competition.
Matteo Fabbro: “The goal from the start was to be in the top-10, and we achieved it so we are more than happy. Despite all the circumstances, we also tried to avoid risks but the way is good. Today was a really tough day, which all of us who competed will remember. The rain, the wind, the cold… but we made it”.
Jesús Hernández, sports director: “I’m very happy. It was a tough day, so much so that they had to shorten the stage, but the guys behaved perfectly. It was a day to protect Fabbro, the riders have done it perfectly and then he has managed to get into the top-10 in front of the big favourites, cyclists of the highest level. He has lived up to the work of his team-mates and has responded with a great result both for himself and for the team”.
