Eleazar Jimenez and Iker Diaz, 5th and 6th, give the team victory to the juniors
The first race of the Trofeo Cabedo, the Trofeo Julian Borrás in Càlig, was won by a rider on a movement of 11 cyclist in the last kilometres that would come to fruition. The Polti Kometa riders were the best team of the day.
The race started with the usual high pace and the riders were very aware from the start. The 5 laps of the circuit did not have the hardness that they would find the next day in Castellnovo, so the idea was a possible sprint finish. On the first climb to the only king of the mountain point of the day, Eleazar Jimenez crossed third, showing the attitude of the team.
After several unsuccessful attacks, a group of 11 riders managed to open an advantage over the bunch. In this group Iker Diaz and Eleazar Jimenez were the team’s representatives. The breakaway was successful with Jimenez 5th and Diaz 6th. In the main group, Oscar Orts managed to take second place (13th) and get the team victory.
“There was a break with 20 kilometres to go and there were riders from practically all the teams and we were able to make it. We started the last meters well placed, but the rider in front of me went off and the first four riders opened a too big gap. We could have done better”, explained Eleazar Jimenez at the end of the race. “We knew we had to be careful. Oscar was our main option, but we had to be there,” he added.
