Double 10th and Serrano 14th in the second stage of Giro d’Abruzzo
A tight sprint was expected in the second stage of the Giro d’Abruzzo, in the end there was a solo UAE victory but Team Polti Kometa showed up! After the peloton caught the four breakaway riders 20 km from the finish, indeed some GC men made their moves on the last uphill in the Marsica region and Paul Double remained with the leaders.
Twelve riders crested the summit with a half-minute advantage over the rest. In the final descent Christen made the winning move, while the English climber from Polti Kometa worked excellently to secure the 10th position and rise to 7th overall. Shortly after, the chasers arrived with Javier Serrano finishing in 14th place.
“With my teammates we arrived at the foot of the climb in the right position, and there was more action than we thought,” commented Double. “So, I started controlling every attack. However in the final kilometers, considering that Yates and Sivakov rightly weren’t collaborating as they had their teammate in the lead, I preferred to conserve energy for the queen stage…”
This was the satisfaction of the sports director Giovanni Ellena: “Our guys once again showed their spirit and condition, tomorrow we’ll start from Pratola Peligna with good ambitions.”
