Davide Piganzoli on the attack in the final stage of Vuelta a Burgos with Diego Sevilla winning KOM jersey
The last stage of the Vuelta a Burgos included a brave attempt in the last 20 kilometres by Davide Piganzoli, who was virtually on the podium, but was neutralised in the final part of the race. Diego Sevilla climbed up to the podium to receive the final KOM jersey.
A quiet day at the start for the entire Team Polti Kometa, which nevertheless took advantage to the tough first pass through the finish line with Davide Piganzoli, looking to regain the top-10 overall. Alongside him, Lafay (Decathlon) worked hard in the relays in front of the bunch, and within the last 15 kilometres they had more than 25 seconds on the leader’s peloton.
But there was no respite for the sprinters’ teams, working hard and pushing fast, to neutralise Piganzoli’s brave attempt with 5 kilometres to go. The race was settled in the sprint with Bittner (DSM) taking his second win and Kuss (Visma) confirming his overall victory. Piga finished 11th.
On the final podium of the Vuelta a Burgos, Diego Pablo Sevilla received the final jersey as the best climber of the race. A success that he achieved in the first stage and that he has defended to perfection. The proof of the high level of Team Polti Kometa in this competition.
Davide Piganzoli: “We wanted to try to put Restrepo in a good position for the finish, but suddenly I found myself in front, with Lafay. So we worked well together, looking for the win and to get back into the top-10. It wasn’t possible, they neutralised us from behind and there was a sprint. But the feeling was very good and I’m really happy for the team”.
Diego Pablo Sevilla: “I’m very happy. Today we had to show our best in a very fast day chasing the breakaway, Piga tried in the final part, but the overall balance is very good getting this jersey of the mountain that means a lot to me”.
Jesús Hernández, sports director: “The balance of this Vuelta a Burgos has to be very positive. We managed to stay just outside the top-10 overall in a race of a very high level, and we also climbed the final podium with the KOM jersey with Diego Sevilla. In addition, until the last moment, Piga has tried to move today in the final part, which means a great personal growth and great feelings for the rest of the season”.
Team Polti Kometa will race this Sunday the Circuito de Getxo to close these weeks of competition in Spain.
