David Puente and David Gimeno, in the fight for a Memorial José Luis Junco where the breakaway triumphs
Memorial José Luis Junco 2021
Unquera – Colombres (112,4 km)
Marc Terrasa, twelfth, a couple of seconds behind the group of the Cup leader Iker Bonillo, was the best classified this Sunday in the return of the Spanish Cup, held in Cantabria with the Memorial José Luis Junco. In this edition, after the forced absence from the roads in 2020, the breakaway triumphed. Four cyclists, Pau Martí, Jan Castellón, Roberto Alonso and Alain Suárez, fought for a sprint victory on the final climb, which was finally won by Martí.
The four of them had been in the lead after a regrouping that took place within the last fifteen kilometres, a movement where the Cantabrian David Gimeno also fought for a place, he was twenty seconds behind, and that came to put an end to the great adventure of Jorge García.
García rode alone for a good part of the day, with more than two and a half minutes for many kilometres, and was caught by the chasers halfway up the first climb to the finish area. During his adventure, there were many attempts in the peloton to try to get closer to the head of the race. Among them, one with the signature of David Puente. Also a lot of collective work deployed on the Astur Cantabrian routes by the boys led by Guillermo Gutiérrez.
