David Martín, in the fight for victory in the return to Extremadura: second at the finish in Olivenza
XXVI Vuelta a Extremadura
Stage 1: Monesterio – Olivenza (136 km)
The Vuelta a Extremadura completed its return to the roads with an opening stage that fulfilled the prediction of a mass sprint, on a slight slope in the uphill Santa Engracia street in Olivenza, in which David Martín from Seville finished second, behind Miguel Ángel Fernández from Cantabria. Javi Serrano finished sixth in the volata.

It was a day of reunions and celebrations, with a lot of wind at the start and several breakaway attempts that, never with significant differences, followed one after the other before the regroupings imposed by the big group. The riders of the U23 structure of the Contador Foundation were especially active in the chase. Olivenza was a favourable finish for the sprint. And for the characteristics of David Martín.
“We were close. The sprint was very good for me, a finish that went uphill. The team did a great job during the whole stage, which was not flat at all and with moments, especially at the beginning, where the wind was blowing a lot. I looked very good and I wanted to go first, but Miguel Angel came out very strong, overtook me and I couldn’t do anything. We have to be happy, because we were in the fight and the day was saved in terms of overall aspirations”, explained the rider from Seville.
