David Martín from Seville takes his second win in the Spanish Cup 2021 with victory in the return of the GP Primavera de Ontur
67º Gran Premio Primavera
Ontur – Ontur (172 km)
Second victory for David Martín in the 2021 edition of the Spanish Cup. The rider from Seville won this Sunday in the Gran Premio Primavera de Ontur, penultimate round of a competition whose overall was closed by Pau Miquel and in which the Andalusian from Mairena del Aljarafe scored important points to fight to be present on the final podium. The last race, the Clásica de Pascua on 7 August, will decide. Miguel Ángel Fernández and Raúl Rota finished second and third in Albacete.
Martín imposed his top speed on the uphill Calle del Pozo within the small group of thirty or so riders who faced the final part of the last lap of the new circuit proposed by the organisers, the final kilometres in which the race went crazy with some offensive attempts that kept them in the lead with just a few seconds to spare.
The atypical edition of the Gran Premio Primavera 2021, the first after the forced break of 2020 and held in the middle of summer instead of on the festive dates of Saint Joseph’s Day, was an exercise in constant wear and tear, with many attacks throughout the race, in which the wind made an appearance as expected, perhaps not with the force of other occasions, and in which the regroupings, with a smaller number, were also the keynote of the day.
Martín, always very attentive, managed to save, together with Joan Martí Bennassar and Vicente Hernaiz, an important crash that cut the group at around kilometre 85. A leading group that was already around ninety riders, which was little more than half a hundred in the last forty kilometres. In the final phase of the race, on the new and interesting circuit, the riders of the U23 structure of the Contador Foundation worked at the head of the group to keep the race as controlled as possible with a view to a sprint. With six kilometres to go, there were 30 riders in a position to fight for success. With four kilometres to go, there were fifteen.
David Martín, winner in Ontur: “A victory is always nice, but a victory in one of the most important races for a profile like mine is even nicer. It has been a hectic day because of the crashes and the cuts, but the team has been great, always keeping me protected. The final circuit is very nice, it doesn’t give you a break. The last five kilometres we were already a very small group and despite the attacks that came I was able to keep calm because I knew that a few seconds were recoverable in a finish that favoured me a lot for my characteristics. There is only one race left, let’s see if we can make good that there are no two without three and, jokes aside, fight to be on the final podium of the Spanish Cup 2021”.
