David Martín finishes twelfth in an edition of the Guerrita where La Perdiz made the gap
XXX Trofeo Guerrita
Alcantarilla – Alcantarilla (169,3 km)
David Martín, twelfth and leading the sprint of the first main bunch, was the best rider of the U23 structure of the Foundation this Wednesday in a festive edition of the Trofeo Guerrita, scoring for the Copa de España Élite-Sub23, which was moved to the Regional Day of Murcia from its original date due to the health situation three months ago. An edition of the Guerrita in which the race broke up at the Alto de la Perdiz and in which, in the end, Francisco Agea (Gomur) won alone.
After many kilometres of very lively pace without any breakaway that managed to consolidate, many attempts along the way, yes, La Perdiz selected the race definitively. The iconic climb of the Sierra de Espuña is long, constant and concentrates demanding areas. There, the Lizarte team set a very strong pace and reduced the peloton to eighteen units, but Martín could not be among them after being involved in a crash in the middle of the climb. The leading group continued to lose units and Iván Cobo ended up at the head of the race on the descent.
Eleven riders finally regrouped in the last 25 kilometres, a minute and a half ahead of the chasing group in which the EOLO-KOMETA riders, with Álvaro García, Yago Segovia and Edu Pérez-Landaluce in action, were working hard to reduce the gap to around 50 seconds. The breakaway resisted and in the last kilometres some movements began to take place. Agea, with ten kilometres to go, ended up consolidating his position. At 45 seconds came his teammate in the ‘Gomur’ Sergio Trueba and the leader of the Copa de España overall Pau Miquel. At 1’47” came the group led by David Martín.
Guillermo Gutiérrez, director of the U23 team on Wednesday in Murcia: “The climb to La Perdiz was the key to the outcome of the race. Lizarte was very superior on the climb, imposing a very high pace, and Gomur also managed to put riders in the leading group. Two strong teams represented at the front and with many interests. In front we had Álvaro García, but we stopped him before the top of the climb to be able to work behind in favour of David’s options both in the race and for the Cup. Although we were able to get closer and cut time, it wasn’t easy. The guys worked very well in an unfavourable situation. We have to look ahead and the imminent future is the Memorial Momparler on Saturday”.
