David Martín finishes second in the ‘Spanish Cup’ sprint in the Port of Vigo

The Andalusian David Martín continued his progression in the Spanish Cup by finishing second this Sunday in a Vigo Copa de España 2021 that was resolved in a sprint for a reduced group where the fastest this time was the Catalan Marc Brustenga. Martín, with 100 points in his bag, now in the top 5, which is still led by Pau Miquel, came close to victory in a race where the entire U23 team of the Foundation put in a great group performance.

With a route of mileage typical of a professional race, hardened by three climbs of substance, the Spanish Cup provided a nice sporting spectacle with a great pulse between different sporting structures; with bets to generate complex strategic situations half the race and an interesting control in the face of the finish.

On the Alto de Chenlo, the hardest and most demanding of the day, there was a movement that was consolidated on the descent with some previous attempts; a movement led by ten riders including Vicente Hernaiz from Puebla. This breakaway, which reached a lead of two minutes, ended up neutralised before the first pass over Monte Alba. From there to the finish, many attempts were made without excessive time gains. Álex Martín or Fernando Tercero were two of the riders of the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team involved in this race.

“I believe that it has been the race in which we have worked better as a team. I have felt very well. I am very happy with how I felt on the climbs. But in any case, the work of all my team-mates was much more important. Without them this result would have been impossible”, says David Martín.

Rafa Díaz Justo, director of the U23: “It was a race with two climates. At the beginning it was cold and rainy. Then everything dried out and it ended up being hot at some point. It’s probably going to be the longest of the season because with the long neutralised stage that we had, it probably went to 190 kilometres. We were well positioned at the right moments. On the last climb David was good and passed in front. We had four riders in that group, and towards the finish line we tried to control and now the sprint has a point of uncertainty. This Monday, more and better”.
