David Domínguez triumphs at home and wins the absolute Catalan Championship in Sabadell
Campionat Catalunya 2022 Élite Sub23
Sabadell – Sabadell (95 km)
The catalan rider David Domínguez won the Catalan cycling title on Sunday, both in the absolute and U23 categories, titles at stake in his home town: Sabadell. Domínguez beat at the finish the Australian resident in Girona Tristan Cardew, with whom he starred in the great breakaway of the day.
The city once known as the ‘Catalan Manchester’ for the strength and power of its textile industry hosted this Sunday a race that came to pay tribute to the Unió Ciclista Sabadell, an institution that was created in 1922 and that during this 2022 celebrates its centenary. In order to put the Catalan titles at stake, the originally planned route of just over 144 km ended up being reduced to almost a hundred. The organisers eliminated one of the two laps that had to be done on a route that included the Coll de Lligabosse.
It was on the climb to Granera via Sant Llorenç Savall, some three kilometres at an average of over 6% with ramps of over 15%, where Domínguez and Cardew left the discipline of the participating peloton. As a result of their good understanding, they ended up amassing a succulent advantage that allowed them to reach the finish and face a head-to-head. Domínguez, overall champion and also U23 champion, adds a new success in the Catalan calendar, where, among other successes, he has already won the Cup in the junior category.
“We got away on the first hard climb of the day, around kilometre 35, and we got on very well from there until the end. With five kilometres to go, we had a three-minute advantage over the peloton. At that point, we kept a closer eye on each other. The sprint was especially watched by both of us, we practically started at a standstill. Fortunately I was able to win it well”, said the rider.
