David Domínguez, third and king of the mountain in the historic Leintz Bailarako Itzulia in Aretxabaleta
83ª Leintz Bailarako Itzulia
Aretxabaleta – Aretxabaleta ( 115 km)
David Domínguez took part this Tuesday in the historic Leintz Bailarako Itzulia of Aretxabaleta, ninth race of the Lehendakari 2022 Tournament, with an outstanding third place finish in a race where he also won the overall mountain race thanks to his good performances in the decisive climb to Gaztaga. The victory went to Samuel Fernández (Caja Rural), with Yago Segovia (Gomur) in second place.
“The climb, which was done twice, had six kilometres at an average of five per cent, but the really hard part was the last three, at an average of 9.5 per cent. That’s where it all came down to the wire. At the first stage there was a breakaway, I moved from the bunch, reached the head of the race and was able to finish in first position”, explained the Sabadell rider about the first part of the race.

“Lizarte took command of the peloton and with their work they caught us. We were about 80 riders in the peloton. In the end, running alone, there was no other option but to ride in the group until the second climb. There again, everything was very selective. In the hardest part Samuel Fernandez moved, I caught his wheel and we went away with Mulu, who in turn moved after. I was able to neutralise him at the top and crown. On the descent, both Fernández and Yago Segovia arrived and the four of us got on well in a very steep final section. In the sprint, which was a bit complicated because of a chicane and the type of road surface with small slabs, I didn’t manage the finish better. But overall the race was good”, he concludes.
