Dario Giuliano third in Trofeo Caja Rural

The second race of the weekend for the group that travelled to Zamora was to result in another podium for the team. While Tommasso Bessega took second place on Saturday, Dario Giuliano finished third on Sunday.

The race was over 160 kilometres long, in the purest ‘classic’ style, it started following the dynamics of the previous day: attacks that did not open big gaps and breakaways that after a few kilometres were neutralised. Tommasso Bessega was very active in the early stages of the race, scoring points on the mountain passes and in the first special sprint.

Midway through the day, calm returned to the bunch before one of the key moments of the day. The main group split into two large groups and from the chase between the two would emerged a small advance group that took advantage. In this group was Dario Giuliano. The Frenchman got himself in head of the race and tried to distance his rivals on the last climb of the day, but they finally reached the sprint together. Giuliano took third place in a tight sprint to complete the podium. Tommasso Bessega finished tenth and the team took the team victory.

“Today was a very fast race. The whole first part was well managed by my team-mates, who followed all the attacks well, and on the first slopes, the race really got going. At around kilometre 120 I attacked after one of the climbs and there were eight of us in front. However, I was the only rider of the team and on the last climb, with 10 km to go, I tried to get away from them by attacking several times and we ended up as four riders. There was no cooperation, so we were caught by the rest of the breakaway and in the uphill sprint I finished third. The victory today was a bit complicated because the Russian rider was very strong. I want to thank all my team-mates for their hard work. I’m a bit disappointed not to reward the team’s work with a victory, but I want to thank everyone anyway,” said Dario Giuliano, the team’s protagonist in the Trofeo Caja Rural GP San José.
