Breakaway and 10th place for Miguel Moreira on Vuelta a Cantabria

Stage 2: Vioño - Vioño (138km)
Vuelta a Cantabria

The second stage of the Vuelta a Cantabria was contested on a demanding route to which the presence of rain added an extra degree of difficulty. The team was protagonist in the different breakaways of the day with five riders showing up in these groups. Finally Miguel Moreira was the best of the team in tenth position.

The day began with Hugo Pradas being offensive and looking for the breakaway. The rider from Madrid led the first breakaway of the day along with two other riders that allowed him to score points in several of the secondary classifications. Óscar Orts tried to link up with Pradas’ group, but both were neutralized around kilometer 60 after several counterattacks. Shortly after, the breakaway of the day was formed. A group of three riders rode in the lead with Miguel Moreira and four other riders chasing. Once together, the eight riders rode for a long time in the lead while the attacks continued behind. Ivan Loaisa in a trio in which Pradas could not resist on and Iker Díaz in the different groups that were formed tried to get closer to the head of the race. Ivan Loaisa finally managed to reach Moreira’s group along with six other riders forming a group that would fight for the victory of 15 units.

In the final of the stage, after 120 kilometers, most of them in the rain, Loaisa had to give up due to cramps. Moreira tried to get as far as possible when the hostilities broke out and managed to finish 10th on a day in which the finish line was a trail of riders in very small groups. Iker Díaz finished 21st and managed to keep his jersey of best cyclist from Cantabria.

Miguel Moreira: “The truth is that from the beginning of the race I didn’t feel good. I was in a very good position to win the stage, but it was not possible. Everything is still open and many things can change, the race is not over until tomorrow at the end of the stage and there is still a lot to fight for”.
