Bais brothers’ fairy tale is colored green
A beautiful ride. A goal put in the crosshairs and hit. A family escape, Mattia and Davide Bais: two brothers with the same jersey and the same will to make it. A podium at Tirreno-Adriatico with Davide’s green jersey, conquered with today’s breakaway but also with yesterday’s attack that had actually left a little bitter taste in the mouth.
This is the chronicle of a day to remember, for us of EOLO KOMETA, on the roads of the “Race of the Two Seas”: 145 km of arm-in-arm breakaway, after the attack orchestrated yesterday by Bais and Maestri, for a team that interpreted this race in the way it likes best. Up front, trying to make their mark. Sure, after conquering the two KOMs the Bais brothers were caught by the peloton with the sprinters’ teams that didn’t let the sprint slip away (Jasper Philipsen won, wonderfully piloted by Van Der Poel). But the perfect tactics decided by our sports directors and the legs of our riders led to the maximum result: and tomorrow, we wear green!
Stefano Zanatta: “We started this morning with the only goal to conquer the jersey that had escaped us yesterday, we moved with two riders in front and since the first KOM was not very hard we were a bit afraid that Gandini could resist like yesterday. That’s why Mattia tried to anticipate and we saw that Gandin got in trouble, so Davide followed his brother and we decided to go ahead and take all the points we could. Goal achieved, in the final with the wind Fortunato took a small hole but the team ran well and we made a good impression.”
Davide Bais: “After yesterday, when I couldn’t get the jersey, I had a lot of anger inside that I vented today: really, I couldn’t let it slip away. We did exactly what was planned by the directors, and I have to thank my brother Mattia who helped me so much: it’s not the first time we’ve been in a breakaway together, but it’s the first time we’ve done it with the same jersey and it’s a great feeling. Tomorrow we have a stage with many KOMs ahead of us, I will do everything to show off this jersey and try to defend it.”
Mattia Bais: “The goal was to take the jersey with Davide, he lost it yesterday and he was angry because he missed the sprint so today we started out determined. We knew we would have to do the first climb at full throttle and in fact Gandin went in trouble and we were able to manage well. I think it was nice to see two brothers in the breakaway with the same jersey, it’s not something that happens often: for us it was nice but also very tiring. Now we have this jersey to defend at all costs.”
