Antonio Gonzalez 8th from the breakaway in Xátiva
The team was very offensive throughout the day in the Trofeu Fira d’Agost. With three riders in the breakaway, Antonio González was the one who got the furthest and finished 8th.
The race started with the usual movements to form a first breakaway. Manuel Sanroma was very active in the early stages of the day, but it was Luca Bagnara who would reach the head of the race in the second lap to be part of the breakaway of the day. On the third lap, António González together with Sanroma himself would reach the head of the race to put the bunch in check. The maximum gap reached over three and a half minutes and the main group was never unable to close the gap again.
The breakaway was losing units and seeing its advantage reduced, but the bunch could not manage to neutralize all the riders. Antonio Gonzalez was the rider who went farthest for the team and finished in a great eighth position.
Antonio González: “There was an initial breakaway and I decided to attack from the group and together with other riders we managed to get ahead although it took us a lap. The sensations have been with us all day. The attacks in the group started and on the penultimate climb I attacked and we went ahead about ten riders. I was alone in the breakaway in front against other teams that had several riders. It was difficult to control the race and it got way, but I couldn’t respond to every attack myself. We got a good result that gives us confidence for what’s to come after a difficult year”.
Miguel Gómez: “António finished in the top 10. We knew it was going to be a day for the breakaway and we had three riders in front; Luca, Sanroma and Antonio. I asked them to fight. We all like the victory, but they rode well and with attitude, so nothing to reproach”.
