Another day of protagonism for Sergio García before a stage with ascent and descent to Picón Blanco

Sergio García was again one of the protagonists of the day in the Vuelta a Burgos, whose second stage finished this Wednesday in Briviesca with a sprint victory for the Colombian Juan Sebastián Molano, leadership for Gonzalo Serrano and again Vincenzo Albanese, during the stage in the green jersey of the regularity, placed in the third position of the provisional general classification.

The Andalusian García was filtered in the breakaway of the day, five cyclists with much presence for the Spanish ProTeam category or with interests in Spanish cycling: Carlos Canal (Burgos-BH), Oier Lazkano (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) Raúl García Pierna (Kern Pharma), Unai Cuadrado (Fundación Euskadi) and the rider from Alcalá del Valle on behalf of the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team.

The adventure started early, found no opposition in the peloton and soon reached an advantage of more than six minutes, although as the kilometres went by this difference decreased progressively to stabilize around two and a half minutes. It would come to an end in the last 19 kilometres.

Sergio García: “I felt very good and I decided to try it again. The breakaway was very interesting, with good riders like Lazkano or García Pierna, and for a moment we thought that, why not, maybe we could reach the finish. At the start it was especially hard, because the wind was blowing quite a lot, but as the race progressed it calmed down and we were able to manage the day without any major complications. Once the peloton caught us, we just had to hold on to get to the finish. But it was a good day. I really enjoyed myself in the breakaway, seeing my parents and one of my brothers at some point of the race. Now comes the Picón Blanco, which is going to be a much more important stage than it might seem”.

Indeed, this Thursday the Vuelta a Burgos reaches its halfway point with a new day in which the ascent to the Picón Blanco will not finish at the summit, as will happen in the next Vuelta a España, but will have to manage a rapid descent to Espinosa de los Monteros. In recent months, the authorities have repaired an old access track to the old military installations on the summit from the Puerto de La Sía, which will allow for a very demanding double-sided climb in the Cantabrian Mountains of Spain.
