Álex García
U23
Catalan Álex García was the only rider from the youth structure to join the U23 project of the Contador Foundation for 2023. The rider from Viladecans, a student of a Medium Degree in Electricity, is a close friend of Joel Díaz, for two seasons rider of the junior team of the Fundación Contador and the great responsible for the beginning of Álex’s career in the world of two wheels: former neighbours of the neighbourhood, classmates and members of the same group of friends, it was at Christmas 2019 when García broke with the football he had been practising to focus on the road. It was his first year in the cadet category. “In my life I had never ridden a road bike, my thing was football, where I played as a midfielder. Sometimes at weekends we would go out on the mountain bike and stuff like that, but nothing serious. Other times we’d go to see Joel at a race. Things like that. One day, on one of those long weekends before Christmas when we didn’t have school for several days, I rented a road bike to go out with Joel. And that was a life-changing experience. I really liked it. I just tried it out and, somehow, I got hooked”, recalls García, who started out in the Club Ciclista Sant Boi. García, with Castilian-Leonese and Galician roots and a great connoisseur of the high mountains of the Galaico Massif and the Montes de León, is a small rider in terms of height and light in terms of weight. In 2023, he has made his first year in the category, going calmly, enjoying some experience in the Italian calendar and with a final part of the season in which he has been able to be seen much more active.
