Davide Bais opens Tour de Slovakia with a breakaway and top-10 finish
The Tour of Slovakia got off to a crazy start on the first day with a breakaway of 14 riders and the first winner and leader Cavagna (Soudal). With a lot of ambition, Davide Bais managed to filter ahead but could not pass the selection in the middle of the race, finally finishing in 10th position.
The three climbs in the early kilometres of the Tour de Slovakia encouraged the brave attacks in the opening stage. Attentive Bais collaborated in a group with 13 other riders to increase the gap to more than two minutes after the 50th kilometre. However, taking advantage of the last climb, only six riders remained in the lead with Bais chasing in a second group.
The fight at the front contrasted with a peloton that continued to accumulate losses and that already in the final circuit was led by EOLO KOMETA itself. Bais sprinted to get into the top-10 of the day while the main group lost almost 6 minutes in a strange start to the race, which still has four days to go.
Biagio Conte: “We didn’t expect such a hard stage, but in the end it all broke up and a very large group at the front was formed on the third KOM. Davide Bais managed to get in, although it was a very high level breakaway in which many WorldTour teams had filtered out two riders, so he couldn’t get through the selection in the final part. I think we were able to save the day, even though Bais was not our fittest rider, and we still have a chance to keep fighting for good results here in Slovakia”.
