Since José Manuel ‘Coque’ Uría, uncle of the U23 team rider Pablo Uria, won the 1987 edition, the Vuelta al Besaya has not stopped growing and evolving to become one of the most prestigious races on the European calendar for the junior category. The passion of its organisation, the support of the institutions and the commitment of the cyclists season after season, have made it possible that in the collective imagination of the category, the Vuelta al Besaya is a very special moment of the season.
Since 1987, which is becoming more and more distant, only one rider, the Andalusian Christian Rodríguez, has been able to win two consecutive editions. The now professional won the Vuelta al Besaya in 2012 and 2013. And that option is now within reach of the Portuguese Antonio Morgado (Bairrada), winner in 2021 in his first year as a junior and first Portuguese triumph since the also professional Daniel Viegas did it in 2016 ahead of Íñigo Elósegui and Joao Almeida.
For the junior structure of the Besaya Foundation it is a special race in which they have achieved very good results and unforgettable moments. Álex Martín, Carlos Rodríguez and Arnau Gilabert won the overall between 2018 and 2020. For this new edition, a very special edition in memory of the lamented Paco ‘Micro’ Ruiz, speaker of the race (and of many other sporting events in Cantabria) who passed away last November at the age of 75, the team comes with six second year cyclists and one first year cyclist: Nil Aguilera, Joel Díaz, Pedro García, Lucas Guillermo, César Pérez, David Puente, Manuel Sanroma.
The route proposed by the Club Ciclista Besaya and José Antonio Mantilla does not forget the two most iconic climbs of the race, such as the Collada de Cieza (which will be climbed in the first and last stage) or the Collada de Brenes (the great pass of each edition given its hardness and in the menu of the final day), also proposes a stage that visits the valley of Pas and will have an uphill finish (the third) and a second day with a high finish in the recurrent village of Bostronizo.
