“I lacked that little bit of form to be able to be with the best after having been practically out of action for a week”

58º Giro Ciclístico della Valle d´Aosta
Stage 5: Valtournenche – Breuil Cervinia (119,7 km)

Scottish rider Oscar Onley (DSM) closed this Sunday a new edition of the Giro del Valle d’Aosta that ended at the foot of the Matterhorn, spectacular, with Italian rider Davide Piganzoli finishing fourteenth, 4’13” behind, and Spaniard Fernando Tercero from La Mancha twenty-eighth, 4’58” behind. The overall, with no surprises, went to the young Frenchman Lenny Martinez (FDJ), while Tercero finally finished 17th, 14’36” behind the Frenchman. EOLO-KOMETA U23 was the sixth squad among the 18 participants.

David Domínguez was responsible for giving prominence to the U23 structure of the Contador Foundation with an offensive movement that has kept him sandwiched between the breakaway of the day, originally nine riders and then gradually losing units until Onley was left alone in the lead on the final climb, and a peloton that at many times traveled more than five minutes of the escapees.

“Rafa told us that the first climb of the day could be a good place to try it out in case the race became very aggressive and we could be ahead at that point. The truth is that I really enjoyed today, riding in a different way to the rest of the days and with an incredible route. I really enjoyed the stage”, said the rider from Sabadell.

Regarding his final overall, Tercero said: “In the end I lacked that little bit of form to be able to be with the best after having been practically stopped for a week because of the COVID-19”.
