Fernando Tercero on the podium in the U23 ITT at the Nationals: bronze in Cala Millor
Spanish Cycling Championships
ITT U23: Cala Millor –Cala Millor (21,6 km ITT)
The La Mancha rider Fernando Tercero won the bronze medal this Friday in the U23 time trial discipline at the Spanish Cycling Championships being held in Palma de Mallorca. The guy from Valdepeñas, who has just finished eighth in the overall of the Giro d’Italia U23 a few days ago, made a great individual fight against the clock, setting the best time at the intermediate point of the 21.6 km course.
At the intermediate point Tercero clocked 14’30”, the best time in a tight provisional classification in which up to five riders were separated by just eight seconds. Pablo Castrillo from Aragon, who had set the fourth best time, seven seconds ahead of Tercero, ended up winning in the end with a time of 27’24”. 28’03” was the final time of Tercero, Intercalado, silver for him, Pablo García from Madrid (27’49”).
Francisco Muñoz from Catalonia finished with the fifth best time of the day, 28’07”, and Antonio González from Castilla-León, in his first year in the category, set the tenth best time of the time trial (28’35”). Marcel Camprubí, the fourth of the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team U23 riders in competition with their respective regional teams, finished 18th, with 29’47”.
Fernando Tercero: “The first part was the hardest and I had to make the most of it, because then it was a more favourable terrain for big riders in which, in addition, there was a lot of wind blowing in my favour that allowed me to ride very fast. It’s possible that in the end I paid for it a bit, but I had to try”.
Antonio González: “I love this discipline and I hope to be able to do well in it in the future. Maybe I expected a bit more, because I’m always very non-conformist and demanding, but the result is not bad for my first year. The sensations weren’t the best and the ifnal part of the time trial was a bit long. Maybe I was a bit too fast and I didn’t know how to suffer more at the end. Without a doubt the level of the time trial was very high, just look at the first riders; we are talking about many of them who will surely make the jump to professionalism next year”.
