Ramón Fernández will not compete in the Spanish Championships in Mallorca: “One day up, one day down, the important thing is to recover”

Spanish Cycling Championships
Palma de Mallorca, 24 -26 june

Asturian Ramón Fernández will not be able to take part in the road race that this Saturday, on the island of Mallorca, will put the national U23 title at stake. Although the Spaniard had set himself the goal of being in the fight in a race that he likes very much, finally the evolution of the injuries suffered in the fall of the second stage of the Vuelta a Extremadura demands calm. Fernández still has stitches in one of his knees.

“I’ve been able to do some cycling these days, but more gentle. I started on Tuesday, I did an hour, and on Wednesday I did another hour or so: The truth is that I don’t have any discomfort, I just felt some tightness in the area of the stitches, as is normal. It was fine for easy riding. But if I tightened it up a bit, I did notice the tightness. One day up, one day down, the important thing is to recover. This Thursday I’ve already had some stitches removed, the ones in my elbow, and from now on I’ll be able to intensify my work. It’s a pity, but that’s the way things have been”, he tells.

Fernández was one of the riders affected by the huge crash that required the intervention of all the medical services present in the race and several transfers to medical centres, which is why the stage was neutralised. The U23 EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team rider received eleven stitches in his right knee and others in his left elbow, where it was necessary to act in a couple of occasions.

“The doctors tell me that the evolution of the wounds is going very well. I trained much more normally today and I hope to be able to train normally this weekend, so I’ll have to go for a walk around La Cobertoria”, he said, before adding in conclusion: “Little by little we are seeing that all of us who fell in Extremadura are getting better with our injuries, although some of us have had to undergo surgery and will be out for a little longer. We wish everyone a speedy recovery. And many thanks to the medical services of the Vuelta a Extremadura for their treatment”.
