Brilliant fifth position of Fernando Tercero in the Colle Fauniera; the rider from La Mancha and Piganzoli enter the top 10 of the Giro U23
45º Giro d´Italia U23
Stage 6: Boves – Colle Fauniera (110,7 km)
Fernando Tercero from La Mancha made a leap in the provisional general classification of the Giro U23 with one stage to go after taking a remarkable fifth place in the last big mountain stage of the race, finishing on the very tough Colle Fauniera. Third crossed the finish line alongside leader Leo Hayter, who defended his lead against attacks from near and far. In front, Belgian Lennert Van Eetvelt, the eventual winner of the stage. Third is eighth in a classification in which Davide Piganzoli jumps to tenth place. Two blue riders in the top ten.
Van Eetvelt was in the large group, up to 28 riders, that led the stage until the final climb. A group in which he had two other companions and in which there were also three riders of the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team: Marcel Camprubí, Andrea Montoli and Fran Muñoz. A battle between the leading group and the leader’s group, separated by a minute and a half – two minutes, which livened up the pace of the day.
At the foot of the Fauniera, after two very fast hours, at an average of over 45 km/h, the group reached the foot of the Fauniera. The group was losing members and also its advantage over the leader’s group in which the Frenchman Lenny Martinez was making moves. Van Eetvelt would leave within the final ten kilometres of a sextet in which Marcel Camprubí was resisting and which would end up being swallowed up by the defensive dynamic of the pursuers. It was at this stage that Fernando Tercero appeared, riding with the leader and looking for his moment.
Eetvelt, who started the day on the third step of the podium, was able to win the stage and climb to second place overall, while Tercero managed to make a significant leap from twelfth to eighth place. Davide Piganzoli, on the other hand, keeps his maglia ‘neri rosa’ which distinguishes him as the first Italian rider in the overall of the race, at the moment tenth.
he Corsa Rosa concludes this Saturday with a stage of 121 kilometres (originally, when the race was presented, with 142 km) between Cuneo and Pinerolo which, although it presents some orographic difficulty at the beginning and the middle of the stage and includes a steep climb on the final circuit where the finish line will be and which will have to be tackled twice, emerges as an opportunity for breakaways or a reduced sprint. A finish on the cobbled Via Principi d’Acaja in Pinerolo with gradients of up to 20%.
