More than 6,600 metres of positive elevation gain in three days on the ever-demanding routes of Castellón
Volta a Castellón
From 10 to 12 June
Three days, as opposed to four in 2021, will host the 2022 edition of the Volta a Castellón which, nevertheless, maintains the essence of that route, especially in the design of its second and third stages. The innovation comes in the opening. And the general tone of the whole event will surely be one of demand and combativeness.
The race of the Province of Castellón, which will be held over a total of 410 kilometres, is one of the most difficult races on the international amateur calendar. Its cumulative elevation gain speaks for itself year after year. In this edition there will be more than 6,600 metres to manage. Perhaps other races have usually had more renown or consideration, but that pedigree and that consideration does not stop increasing from year to year.
In 2022 there will be six foreign teams on the starting line: two French, two Belgian, one from the Principality of Monaco and another from Israel. With Spanish licence, although with an undeniable Italian touch, the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team U23 travels to Castellón with a ‘six’ that combines experience, climbing skills and great work capacity. And a high ceiling: that of a 2021 where a stage victory was achieved by the today professional David Martín and in which Arnau Gilabert finished in the top10.
Gilabert will be present again in Castellón, as will Ramón Fernández from Asturias, fifth overall in 2021, then with Froiz after finishing fourth in the always very tough queen stage of the Penyagolosa Trophy. Edoardo Alleva, David Domínguez, Sebastiano Minoia and Javi Serrano complete a ‘six’ that will be directed by Félix García Casas.
The stages.
Stage 1 (10 june): Les Alqueries – Llucena (139,5 km).
Stage 2 (11 june): Grau de Castelló – Vistabella del Maestrat (139,5 km).
Stage 3 (12 june): Castellón de la Plana – Castellón de la Plana (135 km).
