Copa de España Élite and U23
First race: 27th February | Last race: 15th May
A title that pleases for the meaning it has. The U23 structure of the Contador Foundation finished the 2022 edition of the Copa de España Spanish Cup as the best squad, with 434 points in the final classification by teams. A success already achieved in the penultimate meeting with the third place by squads obtained in the Clásica de Pascua Rutas Xacobeas in Padrón, but that had its reinforcement with the first position in the very hard final race in Vigo. A participation in the Spanish Cup that will be unforgettable, with the victory in the overall individual final, two victories, another four podiums and up to fourteen places in the top ten.
“It has been a special year and the first place in the team category is the icing on the cake. It’s a really nice result and one to remember forever. In the end this first Spanish Cup at individual level that the team has achieved has come after solid group performances with individual victories, podiums and several places in the top ten. It’s nice, no doubt. A season like this, so rounded, comes along every few years. Now it’s time to enjoy it and celebrate it. But not much, because the season continues and there are very important objectives ahead”, says director Rafa Díaz Justo.
Fran Muñoz himself, the eventual overall winner of the Cup, and Fernando Tercero won the Cup races. The Mataró rider won the Gran Premio Primavera de Ontur, the fourth race of the Cup, while the rider from La Mancha did the same in the Aiztondo Klasika, the third. Italian Davide Piganzoli came close to victory in both the Memorial Valenciaga and the Santikutz Klasika, races in which he finished second. And second was also his compatriot Andrea Pietrobon, who came to lead the Cup, in the inaugural race of the competition, the Circuito del Guadiana in Don Benito. The fourth podium came with Javi Serrano’s third place in the Clásica de Pascua Rutas Xacobeas.
Several, up to five, have been the final fourth places that have come in this edition of the Cup for the boys in blue: Pietrobon (Trofeo Guerrita, Clásica de Primavera de Ontur), Fran Muñoz (Memorial Ángel Lozano, Clásica de Pascua Rutas Xacobeas), Fernando Tercero (Santikutz Klásica). Other positions in the top ten during this season were fifth place for Fernando Tercero in the Vigo Cup and David Domínguez in the Memorial Ángel Lozano, sixth place for Fran Muñoz in Aiztondo, the eighth of Davide Piganzoli in Aiztondo and that of Manuel Oioli in the Clásica de Primavera de Ontur, the ninth of Javi Serrano in the Clásica de Primavera de Ontur and that of Ramón Fernández in the Copa de Vigo or the tenth positions of Fran Muñoz (Torredonjimeno) and Marcel Camprubí (Copa de Vigo).
“The team general classification is always very important for us, as it gives value to the sensational work done by all the riders”, emphasised general manager Félix García Casas before the Clásica de Torredonjimeno.
