Pietrobon climbs to the podium of the Vuelta a la Comarca Brigantina and Camprubí rides in the great breakaway of the day
26ª Vuelta a la Comarca Brigantina / Cto. de Galicia Elite y Sub23
Betanzos-Betanzos (146,4 km)
The town of Betanzos in A Coruña hosted this Sunday the Galicia Elite and U23 Cycling Championships in the framework of the Vuelta a la Comarca Brigantina that the Club Ciclista Betanzos recovered last year. A race with a very interesting route that for this year introduced some modifications and on which again competed, partly thanks to the dispute of the test of the Copa del España the day before, a high level participation. In the Plaza de la Constitución, the American Cole Davis won, while the Italian Andrea Pietrobon finished third.
Pietrobon made a very interesting move on the ‘Galibier’, as the Alto de Villozas is popularly known in the area, which allowed him to crown the mountain pass first and lead the race alone for a few kilometres. The Italian was finally caught by Davies, José María Martín (Valverde Team). A trio that would play for the victory in the streets of Betanzos. Half a minute behind was a peloton with Andrea Montoli (5th) and Javi Serrano (7th) at the front.

Until Pietrobon’s move, the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team had enjoyed a leading role through Marcel Camprubí. The Catalan, already recovered of his injury and on Saturday also at good level in Padrón, rode in a quintet of great quality (Camprubí; Vicente Hernaiz on behalf of Rias Baixas; Eric Fagúndez, of Aluminios Cortizo; Álvaro Sagrado and Josep Tomas, of Brocar-Alé) that led the race with up to two minutes and a half until the race entered its last 30 kilometres. Before the ascent of the Galibier, however, the race experienced a strange moment when it was neutralised due to an error at a junction that took several riders off the course who were riding in the breakaway at the time.

Marcel Camprubí: “The injury is now fortunately forgotten. I was really looking forward to racing again and this weekend has been sensational. Today I felt very good, even better than I expected. I have the feeling that we are starting to get back on track. The breakaway was very interesting, with riders who already yesterday in Padrón rode a lot, even with the winner present”.
Andrea Pietrobon: “I was a bit tired from yesterday’s race, but I felt good physically, as the kilometres went by I felt better and my team-mates worked for me towards the end. On the climb I attacked and managed to finish first with about ten or fifteen seconds, but on the descent I was caught by two other guys and in the sprint I ended up third. Both yesterday and today have been good races in view of the last round of the Copa de España, which will be very important”.
