The Fundación Contador U23 Team receives an invitation to compete in the Giro del Valle d’Aosta

One of the most demanding races in the U23 panorama, one of the races with the highest elevation gain per day and of course accumulated, a sporting event that never leaves indifferent due to the complexity of its routes and the majesty of its landscapes. It is the Giro del Valle d’Aosta, an event in which the Contador Foundation has been present in recent years either with the professional structure (when it was part of the continental category) or with the U23 team, either in its first years of existence or in 2021. For this 2022, the team directed by Rafa Díaz Justo and Dario Andriotto has once again received an invitation.
A Giro with a highly coveted wildcard. The Italian race, which will be held over five days again this year and returns to French soil, is one of the races that receives the most requests for participation. Riccardo Moret, president of the organising committee within the Società Ciclistica Valdostana, said: “The selection process has been particularly complex because we have received more than 70 requests from all over the world”. There will be 32 squads taking the start, squads of five riders each: six Belgians, five Italians, four French, three Americans, two from Great Britain and Spain and one each from the Netherlands, Principality of Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Kazakhstan, Colombia, Switzerland, Austria, Israel and Germany.

“The Giro del Valle d’Aosta is on the podium of the most important races on the U23 calendar, without a doubt. The most important names in the categories come there and battle it out on some really tough courses”, explains Rafa Díaz Justo. “To receive an invitation again is an honour and also a great responsibility, because the idea is always to do well. Winning is very, very difficult. It always is. In Aosta even more so. That’s why whatever is done on its routes must always be valued. We have fond memories of 2021, with Álex Martín’s sixth place finish and the great work done by Fernando Tercero, Andrea Montoli and Álvaro García”.
The race has not yet defined in detail its routes nor has it confirmed the kilometres, but it did announce weeks ago the locations of the start and finish of the stages. The final finish line will be located at the foot of the aesthetic Matterhorn, as in 2021. Knowing the DNA of the race, one thing is certain: the mountains will be the main protagonist.
