Pablo Uría, after his first competitive experience in Italy: “The pace is higher and there is more fight for the position”
Asturian Pablo Uría has been one of the riders of the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team U23 of Rafa Díaz Justo and Dario Andriotto who has faced competitions in the Italian calendar. In the case of the cyclist of Gijon, in addition, it has been a pioneering experience. It is therefore interesting because of the freshness of the point of view.
What has most struck Uría about the style of competition on Italian soil? “You go faster than in Spain and that high pace is a constant throughout the race. In Spanish races you also start very fast, it’s not exactly a slow start here, but there is always a quieter moment during the race, more of a break, so to speak, before everything becomes more violent and you start going fast again”.
Uría, whose next commitment is again on the Spanish calendar, has really enjoyed the experience of competing in the Trofeo Fubine. In the Piedmont race he did a great job in favour of his team-mates, getting involved in different race situations and trying to keep the development of the race under some control for the Foundation’s U23 squad. Uría was one of the 80 riders who finished the race. Fifty percent of the riders dropped out or did not qualify.
“The pace is noticeably higher, but also the way of running is more aggressive. The fight for position is constant, there is a fight for position all day long. This makes staying in front all the time really complicated and difficult. A lot of handlebars get in the way”.
Uría searched, fought and nurtured a breakaway for a lap. “Halfway through the race I tried. I and another rider took off, but the high pace behind us didn’t give us much of a margin and we barely managed to hold on for a lap. The circuit was a lot of fun, with the typical things of a street circuit; with many bends and changes of direction and several steep hills”.
