19º Volta a Galicia
Stage 3: Muras – Muras (149 km)

Fernando Tercero, from La Mancha, scored his second victory of the season and became the new leader of the Volta a Galicia after successfully carrying out the offensive that he started, riding in a breakaway, in the last of the climbs of a third day of real madness due to the lively pace and the numerous race situations that occurred during it. A day with a lot of work for the whole U23 team of the Contador Foundation, which started with Álex Martín in the lead.

Javi Serrano was in charge of giving presence to the team in the first big breakaway of the day, a movement of eleven riders, then eighteen with the presence also of Fernando himself and Yago Segovia, who never got to travel with consistent rents. The geography of the regions of Terra Chá (Tierra Llana) and A Mariña hardened the development of a stage in which the peloton of the names fighting for the general classification entered grouped together.

Fernando Tercero and Pablo García, first, with Ángel Coterillo and Daniel Jiménez, who arrived later, faced the climb to Viveiro, the last one of the day; a real trap, with very hard ramps and a narrow road. There, Tercero made his move, a consistent breakaway in which, with a technical descent, he insisted and persisted alone until the end. Behind, in the group, Álex Martín responded to many attacks to contain his rivals and cement his teammate’s chances. From the dedication of Tercero and the work of Martín in the decisive moment, the additional prize of the continuity of the leadership within the team, with a cession between two companions and friends. “It has been a day of exquisite work by all the guys,” says director Rafa Díaz Justo.

Fernando Tercero, new leader of the race: “The race was very, very fast all day. In the first part there was hardly any control. From the second pass of the day we started to take the helm of the race to try to take it to the finish. In the last twenty kilometres attacks started to happen and I was able to filter into a breakaway and try to take it to the finish, until the last part. In the last 20 km the attacks started. I was able to filter into a breakaway with Pablo García, Ángel Coterillo and Daniel Jiménez. On the last climb we had a small break and I decided to start to see what happened. And from there, until the finish line. Now it’s time to defend the lead. And whoever it is, both for Álex and for me. We’re both doing well. We know it will be difficult, the last stage is hard, but of course we are going to fight for it”.
