David Martín wins the sprint in the last stage of the Volta a Valencia
11º Vuelta a la Provincia de Valencia
Stage 4: Moncada – Moncada (122,3 km)
A year ago the Balearic Joan Martí Bennassar, who is now recovering from a serious injury, culminated in the streets of Moncada a work of art of perseverance and effort in the form of a breakaway. This Sunday the Sevillian made the best possible tribute to Jonny with a great sprint victory in the fourth and final stage of the Volta a Valencia 2021, an edition whose overall went to Benjamín Prades. Vicente Hernaiz finished 13rd, 1’33” behind Prades.
Always frenetic, with a nervous circuit that invites to travel all the day with a very lively pace, the stage was marked by the numerous breakaway, a breakaway that came to be of twelve riders, in which rode on behalf of the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team both Vicente Hernaiz from Valladolid and the Asturian Edu Pérez-Landaluce. The group had an oscillating advantage around 1’30” that did not end up lowering in spite of the work of several teams in the peloton.

Finally, the neutralisation was completed on the last lap of the Moncada circuit. Yago Segovia and Andrea Montoli did a great job in that phase in support of David, who in the final straight was able to impose his top speed against Josue Gómez, Nahuel d’Aquila and Alejandro Zurita.
The victory in Moncada is the fourth of the season for the Andalusian rider. “I’m very happy, it’s a result that makes me especially excited because it comes in a town where Joan Martí Bennassar had a great race a year ago. We miss Jonny a lot, a great teammate and a great rider. I am what I am thanks to the work done by my teammates, but a very high percentage is undoubtedly due to Joan Martí. The final stage, we were warned, was going to be nervous whether the breakaway was formed or not. Once formed, we had Vicente and Edu there and the priority behind was to save falls or incidents. When the chase was imminent, Andrea Montoli and Yago Segovia left me in an unbeatable position to be able to sprint”.
