A ‘Spring’ in July, with a lot of heat, the possibility of wind and a revamped final circuit with a surprise

A hallmark of the previous race in Extremadura, the heat and high temperatures will again be the main protagonists of the tenth and penultimate race of the Copa de España Élite Sub23, which travels this Sunday to the province of Albacete to face an eagerly awaited edition of the Gran Premio Primavera de Ontur.

Long awaited, because after its premiere in the competition in 2019 this historic race of the national scene has had to wait until this July 2021 to be seen again in the Cup. Force majeure, health emergencies; in the end, more than two years without taking to the road waiting for the right moment.

The test of the Club Ciclista Onturense, a sporting heritage for the region and one of the most popular and recognized events within the festivities of Ontur in honour of San José, maintains the main lines of its route: the double circuit to Fuente Álamo, triathlete area par excellence; the ascent to La Muela and the whole area of Las Anorias and Corral-Rubio with its exposure to wind; the ascent to La Galera…

In 2021, the organisers have added a small novelty: five final laps of the so-called ‘La Cañá’ circuit, a narrow road that leads to the Bayco reservoir, near which there is a short but steep slope. The finish, however, remains unchanged and takes place on the uphill Calle del Pozo.

David Martín, the great asset of the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team U23 in the fight for the final overall of the Spanish Cup, heads a team where he will be supported by the Balearic Joan Martín Bennassar, the Spaniard Vicente Hernaiz, the Catalan Arnau Gilabert, the Madrilenian Alejandro Luna  and the Italians Davide Piganzoli and Andrea Montoli.
