David Martín finishes second in the Gran Premio San José de El Astillero

The cyclist from Seville David Martín finished second this Sunday in the Gran Premio San José de El Astillero, a race that was resolved in a sprint, a volata marked by a crash in the last kilometre, and in which the ‘caja rural’ Andoni López de Abetxuko won. An intense, disputed sprint, which was the finishing touch to a great morning of cycling in which the U23 team of the Contador Foundation was one of the protagonists.
A very cold edition of the Gran Premio San José, although not too wet, which was held at a very lively pace from the start (it finished ahead of schedule) and provided multiple alternatives at the head of the race that never achieved significant differences. José Luis Medina, Joan Martí Bennasar and Vicente Hernaiz were very attentive to catch the cut-off attempts that occurred midway through the race. The circuit with the Alto de la Venta encouraged many accelerations and provided selection in the peloton as the laps went by, although the control of the teams with fast riders was fundamental.
In this task the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team was especially outstanding, leading the group at different times and decisive in the hunt for the ‘gomur’ Francisco Javier Agea when he was riding with twenty seconds in the last ten kilometres. Álvaro García, Yago Segovia and Edu Pérez-Landaluce were key in this task. Facing the sprint, Vicente Hernaiz led David Martín and even caused a small cut in a steep climb, but the tone of the day was the regrouping and so it happened. For the sprint, saved the fall, and despite the approach being a bit dislocated, it was a nice sprint.
David Martín: “The team did a fantastic job. From the start it was a really fast race. I would especially like to highlight the work of Jonny, Álvaro, Vicente, Medina and Yago in the final part. Maybe I paid at the end for having gone all out, but I think that in the important cuts I had to be present and it was necessary to cover the gaps. Although you always want to win, we all have the same desire, we were very close. It’s a good result and it confirms that we are working well and that we have to continue like this”.
Rafa Díaz Justo: “We keep working. We are getting closer to the goal of victory, but we still have to keep improving. With such a complicated start to the season due to the pandemic, and without the possibility of having been able to work all together in a training camp as we have done in other years, these first tests are also a learning experience for everyone at all levels. We are happy but, above all, we look to the future with optimism”.
