Sicily, Ropero smiles in white jersey

Stage 1: Milazzo – Bagheria (199km)

A beautiful day, in Sicily, for the EOLO-KOMETA: beautiful for the landscapes crossed able to give emotions, beautiful for the result. No, the final victory did not come: in the sprint Matteo Malucelli, with the jersey of the National team, raised his arms, with our David Martìn arrived sixth. “Unfortunately – he said – I was closed in the last curve, otherwise I think I could have arrived further ahead…”.

The day had begun with the escape of Alejandro Ropero, who went in search of the green jersey but was mocked on the GPM: the small group had more than 4 minutes of advantage on the group, and just Ropero was the first one to pass on the flying finishing line conquering those seconds of bonus that allowed him to conquer the white jersey of best of the young riders. Initially, the white jersey had been assigned to our David Martìn (and in fact he went on the podium…): but it will be Ropero, tomorrow, to wear it. “Because – concluded the Sports Director Stefano Zanatta – we always race in this way: chasing jerseys. And we’ll do it tomorrow too…”.

Chaos in the final part. The great work of EOLO Kometa to place his sprinter Giovanni Lonardi throughout the stage, protect him from crashes and try to raise his arms was reflected in the blue ‘treno’ that was leading the bunch with 2.5 kilometres to go.

However, he was unable to contend for the finish after being caught out and closed down on the last sharp turn of the final circuit. At the finish line, Lonardi was 13th. Everybody safe, already thinking about tomorrow’s final climb, which aims to define the general classification of the race.
