Lonardi is on the verge of glory again
O Gran Camiño (2.1)
Stage 1: O Porriño-Vigo (167km)
Presence in the breakaway with Viegas and great sprint of Lonardi in the finish line to stay again at the gates of victory.
A tough stage, but not enough to break the mass finish. The province of Pontevedra provided a demanding day, which was completed at a high speed and had a cut of eight riders as protagonist.
It was there that Daniel Viegas filtered through, taking advantage of the fact that the race was bordering the frontier of his native Portugal. A gap that reached 3 minutes but was quickly reduced by the WorldTour teams before the climbs.
With the breakaway attempt cancelled, the EOLO Kometa riders worked to put Lonardi in the best position to contest the finish. The only thing missing was the finish for the Italian rider, who has now earned a new place of honour and once again shows his excellent form.
Giovanni Lonardi: “We managed to do a good job at the finish. I waited a little bit to start the sprint, because the finish was a bit difficult for me, and Cort Nielsen was the best. It’s a good result and I’m satisfied, in the next few days there’s a climb and we’ll try to do well with Erik Fetter for the general classification”.
