Rain, cold, uphill: welcome to the Giro!
Giro d’Italia 2021
Stage 4: Piacenza – Sestola (187 km)
Boy, what a stage. We knew, we’ve been saying it for a long time: we knew that the Sestola stage would leave its mark. And even more so after seeing the weather forecasts: rain, cold, climbs. And in fact, the expectations have been respected with the first gaps in the ranking between the big and the pink jersey that passed on the shoulders of De Marchi in the stage won by Dombrowski. As expected, our Vincenzo Albanese did not keep the blue jersey of the KOM leaders.
However, the day at EOLO-KOMETA was a positive one. Manuel Belletti, who was suffering after yesterday’s crash, started and finished the stage. Marton Dina and Francesco Gavazzi were part of the day’s breakaway which saw 25 riders take an important lead before breaking away on the final climb. Lorenzo Fortunato performed well on the ramps leading to Sestola, confirming his good condition. A Giro d’Italia day for our guys, most of whom are at their debut in this important race: an opportunity to grow a bit more. And tomorrow? A completely flat stage for the sprinters, with a finish in Cattolica.
Marton Dina: “I think this was the first real stage of the Giro, I’m happy because I was in the breakaway and that was our goal. In the end I was not able to fight for the stage victory, I really tried but on the last climb I had no more energy, but I’m really happy. The tour is long, I think I’ll be in the breakaway a lot more times, maybe I’ll have the chance to fight for the KOM jersey…we’ll see. And if I don’t fight for the jersey, I’ll fight for a stage win: that’s our goal.
