The Giro della Romagna comes back to life: important test on a quintuple circuit

Tomorrow Team Polti Kometa will be among the twenty teams that will revive the Giro della Romagna, one of Italy’s oldest cycling races which, however, has not taken place since 2011. Starting at 11 a.m. from Lugo, the historic venue of the race, there will be initially 129 flat kilometers touching many locations affected by the Romagna flood last year; then, to decide the outcome, the 67 km of Castrocaro circuit will come into play, with the ascent of Bagnolo (almost 4 km at 6%) to be tackled five times with the last crest at -11km from the finish line.

In what appears to be an assault on the UAE, the only World Tour structure in the startlist, Polti Kometa will line up the four Italians Matteo Fabbro, Andrea Garosio, Davide De Cassan, and Mattia Bais, the two Spaniards Fran Muñoz and Javier Serrano, and the Colombian German Gomez.

Coming from the 12th final position in the Tour of the Alps Fabbro is ready to lead his teammates at the Giro della Romagna: “After a good period at altitude, I’m m satisfied to have had a week on the rise,” says the 29-year-old Friulian, “and now another important test awaits us in Romagna. A different type of course, where we’ll try to entertain and see how the legs react after just this restday.”

So says sports director Stefano Zanatta: “It’s good for cycling and also for us that an event like this is back in the spotlight. Unfortunately Davide Bais’ fall at the beginning of the TotA forced us to replace him, but we have a lineup that can ensure we are protagonists both in the breakaway and in the finale. Achieving a result here would give us further morale ahead of the Giro d’Italia!”
