Márton Dina finishes in the top twenty of the general classification in Burgos after a queen stage in which Isaac Cantón shines
41st Tour of Burgos
Stage 5: Santo Domingo de Silos – Lagunas de Neila (146 km)
The Lagunas de Neila are one of the great stages of cycling, a condition that has been gained year after year mainly with the arrivals of the Vuelta a Burgos. The iconic ascent of the Iberian System once again hosted the end of a race in which the Kometa Cycling Team left its mark with a presence in the leaks every day and the fight of the Hungarian Márton Dina to finish in the top20. A fight with a happy ending. The Colombian Iván Ramiro Sosa (Ineos) revalidated his success in the final general and also won in the last day. The Magyar cyclist, 23º to 3:25, was the first of the riders of the Madrid team to cross the finish line. Dina climbed to 19th position in the final standings, 6:59 from Sosa.
The stage was 25 kilometres to go when the Movistar Team began to put a very high rhythm at the head of the main group. A work that highlighted about thirty cyclists among whom Dina could not be. The Hungarian tried to join that group before reaching Quintanar de la Sierra and the beginning of the climb, and was close, but the work of the WorldTour team intensified his zeal and did not allow it. It was time trial. To 16 kilometers for the end that group headboard gave reach to the thickness of the escape of the day, where the manchego Isaac Cantón rolled. Already in the first ramps of the ascent to Neila, the last two adventurers were neutralized.
The final stage, an important day with several uncertainties, was not the day for skirmishes. Not at least in its decisive part. The escape existed, however. But its gestation was not easy and it took a long time. In the end, a large group, seventeen cyclists, multiple formations represented, managed to leave with the approval of an Ineos who did not lift his foot at any time. Cantón, a great climber, gave presence to the Kometa Cycling Team in this numerous movement. The young man from La Mancha was a presence of guarantees.
“Being in the top 20 of this race had become a goal for me after the last stage, a goal for which I was going to give everything,” says Dina. “It was crazy. I also think I made some juvenile mistakes. Today I cut myself before the final climb, some runner went to the ground in a descent and caused a big cut in the pack. I started to climb towards the Lagunas de Neila with a minute lost… I still need to learn a lot of things, but I’m happy with the final balance. Finishing 19th in a race like this is a good result, but now I’m sure I can improve if I learn from my mistakes”.
Jesús Hernández, director of the Kometa Cycling Team: “We left this our second presence in the Vuelta a Burgos with a great taste in our mouths. We have had a presence in the race every day. We have fought, we have given our face and we have run without any complex in a race where several WorldTour teams and professional continental teams compete and finish their preparation for the Vuelta a España. The standard was very high with Matteo Moschetti’s victory and repeating it would have been obviously wonderful, but it was also a very difficult objective as a success like that in a race like this, with the participation and the level it has, is neither normal nor usual. We must also highlight Márton Dina’s performance, in his second race with the team and facing this type of mountains for the first time; he would have been much higher if it had not been for the fall in which he was involved the first day”.
