David Martín, a remarkable second place in Segorbe after a day in the breakaway

David Martín from Seville showed his great form in the first stage of the Volta a Castelló in which he was one of the protagonists of the great breakaway of the day and, once he was caught in the final four kilometres, he was able to recover to get involved in the volley. Pau Llaneras stood out slightly in the last kilometre to win the stage and become the first leader.

Martín, Pablo Carrascosa (Lizarte) and Josep Tomás (Netllar) were the members of the main breakaway in the opening stage. The three of them, well matched to manage the demanding terrain for a good part of the route, never managed to get more than three minutes ahead of the peloton.

On the ascent to Sacañet, in the last 30 km, a Belgian Bonneu (Basso Team) joined the trio and revived the breakaway with new energy and a new attack that only Martin could follow. The two would reach the gates of Segorbe, where they were overtaken by a small group of about thirty riders in whose vanguard there were some accelerations. One of them was Llaneras, who crossed the finish line just two seconds ahead of Martín who, nevertheless, would climb the podium as leader of the flying goals.

We asked David if this breakaway was part of the plans for the stage. “It was a bit a question of fortune”, says the Spaniard. “We were dividing the work between all the team-mates, but in the end it was my turn. We worked hard, because the terrain was demanding. And towards the end I tried to play at being a cyclist, but it didn’t work out the way I would have liked. In any case, I’m happy with the feeling I got from the day, although not with the final result”, he smiles.
