Eighth place for Manuel Peñalver in the second stage of the Tour of Hungary
A chaotic and dangerous finish in Kazincbarcika meant the second top-10 in the Tour of Hungary for Team Polti Kometa thanks to the performance of Manuel Peñalver.
The team rode calmly with a breakaway of four riders that reached over 3 minutes gap. Today’s day included the first climbs of the race, although they did not meant any problems for the team riders.
Once on the final circuit, Erik Fetter and David Martín rode in leading positions but the Andalusian suffered a puncture with 800 metres to go. Manuel Peñalver finished eighth and achieved a new place of honour while Cavendish (Astana) took the victory.
Manuel Peñalver: “We worked well, we were always at the front. But the end was a bit chaotic, we had to gamble and we got an eighth place that doesn’t taste like much. I thank all my team-mates for their work and their trust, now it’s time to put on the ‘domestique jersey’ to help in the mountains”.
Giovanni Ellena, sports director: “I think the guys have worked very well, which a result that does not reward the good work done. David Martín would have been a great help for Peñalver in that final part, a pity about the puncture”.
The first top finish of this Tour of Hungary will take place tomorrow with the arrival at Gyongyos-Kékestetö, the highest point of the country, after a previous passage through this climb, in what will also be the longest day of this Tour of Hungary.
