Another top-10 sprint for Lonardi concludes Team Polti Kometa’s good Tirreno Adriatico

Tirreno Adriatico (2.UWT)
Stage 7: San Benedetto del Tronto (viale Trieste – seafront) 154 km

At the end of a week with a top-20 overall finish by Piganzoli, Team Polti Kometa concludes the Tirreno Adriatico as a protagonist by securing another top-10 sprint finish with Giovanni Lonardi: 8th today in San Benedetto del Tronto, following Tuesday’s 7th place in Follonica.

The six riders led by Stefano Zanatta raced compactly through the undulating hills of the Marche region before tackling the city circuit to be repeated five times. When a persistent six-men breakaway was caught at the final lap’s bell, the maneuvers for the sprint began: Mirco Maestri performed his usual exceptional work to lead to the flamme rouge the Polti Kometa sprinter, who Lonardi positioned himself seven places behind the winner, Milan.

“Coming out of the last corner, I was even third – Lonardi recounts – then they came back well from behind, but in such a high-level field I’m satisfied with my legs and now I aim for the two important classics of next week: especially in the Milano-Torino, I know I can do well…”

Sports director Zanatta‘s assessment: “We did the best we could as always, Lona recovered very well after being a bit boxed in the final 500 meters. It was important to finish the corsa dei due mari by putting on a good display and protecting Piganzoli in the group. We succeeded!”
